White-tailed eagle. Historical artwork of a white- tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). This large eagle inhabits coastal regions, and feeds primarily on fish and birds, both of which it takes from the surface of the water. It also feeds on carrion. It is found across much of northern Eurasia and parts of Greenland, and the more northern populations migrate south for the winter. It became extinct in Britain in the early 19th century, but has been reintroduced to the Western Isles of Scotland. It is Britains largest bird of prey, with a wingspan reaching almost 2.5 metres. Females are larger than males. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935)
