Western clown anemonefish

Western clown anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris) hiding amongst the tentacles of its host sea anemone. This fish has a symbiotic relationship with the anemone. It is immune to the poisonous stings of the anemones tentacles as it has a layer of protective mucus on its skin. When threatened by predators it dashes back into the anemones tentacles. The anemone does not appear to derive any benefit from the fishs presence, but it is not harmed either. This type of relationship is called commensalism. Photographed off Sipadan, Malaysia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting sight of a Western clown anemonefish seeking refuge within the delicate tentacles of its host sea anemone. The intricate relationship between these two creatures is truly remarkable. The Western clown anemonefish, scientifically known as Amphiprion ocellaris, has formed a symbiotic bond with the sea anemone. It possesses a unique immunity to the venomous stings of the anemone's tentacles due to a protective layer of mucus on its skin. This adaptation allows it to navigate freely among the potentially lethal appendages. When faced with danger from predators lurking nearby, this brave little fish swiftly retreats into the safety of its sanctuary - nestled amidst the anemone's tentacles. In return for providing shelter and protection, it seems that the sea anemone derives no apparent benefit from this arrangement but remains unharmed. Such a fascinating interaction exemplifies commensalism in nature – where one species benefits while another remains unaffected. This underwater marvel was expertly captured off Sipadan, Malaysia by Science Photo Library. In this single frame lies a testament to nature's intricate web of relationships and survival strategies. It serves as a reminder that even in seemingly inhospitable environments like beneath ocean waves, life finds ways to thrive through extraordinary adaptations and interdependence.
