West Nile viruses

West Nile viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of West Nile viruses (WNV). This virus is known to cause encephalitis in humans. WNV belong to the group of Flaviviruses and are RNA viruses with cubic symmetry. Here the outer protein coat (capsid) of each virus is red. West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and is known to infect both humans and animals (such as birds). In August 1999 an outbreak of encepha- litis caused by West Nile virus occurred in New York City and neighbouring counties, USA. A mosquito-control campaign successfully controlled this spread of WNV. Magnification: unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a group of West Nile viruses, captured through the lens of a transmission electron microscope. The vibrant colors highlight the outer protein coat (capsid) of each virus in striking red, providing an intriguing visual representation of these microscopic pathogens. West Nile virus is notorious for causing encephalitis in humans and belongs to the Flavivirus family. As RNA viruses with cubic symmetry, they possess a rounded circular shape that can be observed in this image. Mosquitoes serve as carriers for this virus, which has the ability to infect both humans and animals such as birds. The significance of this particular photograph lies in its connection to an outbreak that occurred in August 1999. New York City and neighboring counties experienced an alarming surge in cases of encephalitis caused by West Nile virus during this time. However, thanks to a successful mosquito-control campaign implemented promptly, the spread was effectively contained. As we delve into the realm of micro biology and virology through images like these, we gain valuable insights into pathogenic organisms that impact our health and well-being. This print serves as a reminder of the importance of scientific research and disease prevention efforts aimed at combating threats like West Nile virus.
