Weddell seal

Weddell seal. Eight-week-old Weddell seal pup (Leptonychotes weddellii) swimming under pack ice. Weddell seals are born singly. They have fine soft hair (lanugo) that turns to a dark thicker coat at about a month. They are born with their permanent dentition and, following weaning at six weeks, feed on fish and squid. Found throughout the Antarctic, the majority of their social behaviour occurs in water. Weddell seals have been recorded diving down to 600 metres and are able to stay underwater for up to an hour. They have well developed eyes, which assist them in hunting and locating breathing holes in the ice. Photographed off Signy Island, British Antarctic Territory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the beauty and innocence of a young Weddell seal pup as it gracefully swims beneath the frozen pack ice. The eight-week-old pup, belonging to the species Leptonychotes weddellii, is born with a fine soft hair called lanugo that gradually transforms into a darker and thicker coat within a month. These solitary creatures possess their permanent dentition from birth and begin feeding on fish and squid after weaning at six weeks. Weddell seals are predominantly found throughout the Antarctic region, where they exhibit most of their social behavior in water. Their remarkable diving abilities have been recorded to depths of up to 600 meters, allowing them to stay submerged for an astonishing hour. With well-developed eyes, these carnivorous predators rely on their keen vision to hunt prey and locate breathing holes amidst the icy terrain. Photographed off Signy Island in British Antarctic Territory by Science Photo Library, this image showcases not only the mesmerizing underwater world but also highlights the vulnerability of these marine mammals in their natural habitat. As we admire this adorable baby seal exploring its surroundings, let us appreciate the wonders of nature's creations and strive towards preserving our delicate ecosystems for generations to come.
