Water wheel in Egypt. 19th-century artwork of a type of water wheel known as a sakia (or sakiyeh) being used to raise water for use in irrigation. Earthenware jars strung to ropes of palm fibre are revolving in a loop, dipping into the water and emptying themselves into a trough connected with a reservoir. Such water wheels are usually powered by an animal such as an ox. Artwork by John Douglas Woodward (1846-1924) from Picturesque Palestine, Sinai and Egypt (4 volumes, 1881-1884) by Sir Charles William Wilson (1836-1905)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1880s in Egypt, showcasing a remarkable water wheel known as a sakia. The artwork, created by John Douglas Woodward, depicts this ingenious technology used for irrigation purposes during that era. The scene is set against an arch bridge with a male farmer operating the sakia, illustrating the historical significance of farming practices in Egypt. The intricate mechanism of the sakia involves earthenware jars strung to ropes made from palm fibre. These jars revolve in a continuous loop, dipping into the river's water and emptying themselves into a trough connected to a reservoir. This innovative method allowed for efficient irrigation of crops in arid regions like North Africa and the Middle East. Powered by animals such as oxen, this technological marvel played an essential role in sustaining agriculture at that time. The image captures not only the ingenuity of ancient Egyptian farmers but also highlights their deep connection with nature and their ability to harness its resources effectively. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, we are transported back through time – witnessing firsthand how humans have always sought ways to adapt and thrive within their environments. It serves as a reminder of our shared history and showcases how advancements in technology have shaped our world today.
