Walter Chrysler, US industrialist

Walter Chrysler (1875-1940), US industrialist and automotive executive. Chrysler began his career as a machinist and engineer on the railroads. Chrysler bought his first car in 1908 and spent his spare time taking it apart and putting it back together again. When offered a job with the Buick motor company Chrysler jumped at the chance, despite having to take a 50 per cent pay cut. At Buick, Chrysler introduced production lines and other cost-saving procedures. In 1919 he moved to what would become the Chrysler Corporation.
