Vomiting reflex

Vomiting reflex. Computer artwork of the vomiting reflex. The reflex starts when a message is sent to the vomiting centre of the brainstem (at base of brain, blue). The message may be sent from the stomach, and be due to an infection or overeating, or may come from elsewhere in the brain and be due to brain tumour or injury, motion sickness or migraine. Offensive odours and pregnancy can also cause vomiting. The vomiting centre sends nerve impulses to the stomach, diaphragm and abdominal wall. The impulses cause the bottom of the stomach to constrict, the diaphragm to push down and the abdominal wall to press inwards, ejecting the contents of the stomach up through the oesophagus and out of the mouth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate workings of the vomiting reflex. In this computer artwork, we witness a detailed representation of how this involuntary response is triggered and executed within our bodies. The image highlights the brainstem, depicted in a striking blue hue, as it serves as the control center for initiating the vomiting reflex. Whether it's an infection, overeating, brain tumor or injury, motion sickness, migraine, offensive odors or even pregnancy - various factors can activate this complex mechanism. Once stimulated by these triggers, nerve impulses are swiftly dispatched from the vomiting center to different parts of our body. The stomach responds by constricting its bottom section while simultaneously engaging other key players like the diaphragm and abdominal wall. As a result of their coordinated efforts under these nerve impulses' influence, they work together to forcefully expel stomach contents through both oesophagus and mouth. This visually stunning illustration not only provides us with an insight into one of our body's vital defense mechanisms but also emphasizes how interconnected our nervous system is with various bodily functions. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly unpleasant experiences like nausea and vomiting play crucial roles in maintaining our overall well-being.
