Voltas battery

Voltas battery. Historical illustration of the battery (or pile) made by the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) in 1800. This was the first battery capable of supplying a continuous current. It was made of alternating discs of copper and zinc, separated by porous cardboard saturated with salt solution. This invention made Volta famous, and he was awarded the medal of the Legion of Honour and made a count by Napoleon. The unit of electrical potential (volt) was named in his honour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Voltas battery, a groundbreaking invention by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1800. The historical illustration beautifully captures the essence of this technological marvel that revolutionized the world of electricity. Composed of alternating discs of copper and zinc, separated by porous cardboard soaked in salt solution, this battery marked a significant milestone as it became the first-ever power source capable of delivering a continuous current. Its impact on scientific progress cannot be overstated. The success of his creation catapulted Volta to fame, earning him prestigious accolades such as the medal of the Legion of Honour and even an aristocratic title bestowed upon him by Napoleon himself. As a testament to his pioneering work, the unit for electrical potential was named "volt" in his honor. This artful depiction not only highlights the historical significance but also emphasizes its relevance within modern technology. It serves as a reminder that every innovation builds upon those that came before it. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured both the artistic beauty and scientific importance embedded within this image. It is truly an awe-inspiring piece that transports us back to a time when one man's ingenuity forever changed our understanding and utilization of electricity.
