Vega spacecraft

Vega spacecraft, Russia. In December 1984 an international mission was launched to study Venus and the tail of Halleys Comet. Two identical Soviet spacecraft, Vega 1 and 2, carried the equipment. The US designed a dust collector to analyse the comet. Various other equipment, including a probe in each to release into the atmosphere of Venus, was provided by an international team of scientists. Vega 1 and 2 passed around 8000 kilometres behind the tail of Halleys Comet, collecting important data

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Vega spacecraft, a symbol of Russia's pioneering spirit in space exploration. In December 1984, an extraordinary international mission was launched to unravel the mysteries of Venus and Halleys Comet's tail. Leading this ambitious endeavor were two identical Soviet spacecraft, Vega 1 and 2, equipped with cutting-edge technology. Amidst this collaborative effort, scientists from around the world contributed various instruments to enhance our understanding of these celestial bodies. The United States played a crucial role by designing a state-of-the-art dust collector specifically tailored for analyzing the composition of Halleys Comet. Additionally, both Vega probes carried atmospheric release devices that would be deployed into Venus' atmosphere. In their daring journey through space, Vega 1 and 2 ventured approximately 8000 kilometers behind Halleys Comet's magnificent tail. As they traversed this uncharted territory, they diligently collected invaluable data that would shape our comprehension of comets and interplanetary phenomena. This photograph not only captures the technological marvels developed during this era but also represents an important milestone in international cooperation within the scientific community. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about the universe we inhabit. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this image immortalizes one chapter in mankind's ongoing quest for knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries—a timeless reminder of our relentless pursuit to uncover the secrets hidden among distant stars and planets.
