Tyrannosaurus rex fleeing from an asteroid strike

Death of the dinosaurs. Artwork of the dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex watching an approaching asteroid or comet core which is about to strike the Earth. This impact may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and 70% of all species on Earth. The impact occurred about 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous geological period. The object, thought to be 10-20 kilometres across, struck the Earth at Chicxulub on the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. It threw huge amounts of debris into the upper atmosphere. This blocked out the sunlight, causing darkness and global climate changes. The remains of this debris are found as a layer in rocks called the K/T boundary

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the dramatic moment when a Tyrannosaurus rex, the iconic king of dinosaurs, finds itself in a desperate race against time. As an asteroid hurtles towards Earth, its colossal size and impending impact spell doom for not only this mighty predator but also for countless other species that roam the planet. This catastrophic event marked the end of the Cretaceous period, forever etching it as one of history's most devastating extinction events. The approaching asteroid or comet core is depicted ominously in the background, casting an eerie glow upon our protagonist. With its piercing gaze fixated on the imminent disaster, this T. rex serves as a poignant symbol of nature's vulnerability in the face of cosmic forces beyond its control. Known to have struck approximately 65 million years ago at Chicxulub on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, this cataclysmic impact unleashed chaos on Earth. The resulting debris thrown into the upper atmosphere shrouded our planet in darkness and triggered global climate changes that reshaped life as we know it. Today, evidence of this monumental event can be found within rocks known as the K/T boundary layer—a testament to both destruction and rebirth. Through artistry and scientific exploration intertwined seamlessly in this print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of our planet's tumultuous past and humbled by its enduring resilience amidst such profound loss.
