Typhoon Tokage

Typhoon Tokage. Satellite image of Typhoon Tokage (centre) hitting the western coast of Japan (upper left) on 19 October 2004 at 0215 GMT. The typhoon produced winds of 225 kilometres per hour. Tokage was described as the worst typhoon to hit Japan in 25 years after it claimed 77 lives. It was the 10th typhoon to hit Japan in 2004. Typhoons are huge cyclonic storm systems of high winds blowing around a central eye. They form in areas of relatively calm ocean around the equator. As moist air is forced upwards, a low pressure region forms that becomes the eye of the storm. Image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrodiameter (MODIS) aboard NASAs Terra satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the sheer force and devastation caused by Typhoon Tokage as it struck the western coast of Japan on 19 October 2004. The satellite image, taken by NASA's Terra satellite equipped with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrodiameter (MODIS), showcases the immense power of this cyclonic storm system. At its peak, Typhoon Tokage unleashed winds reaching a staggering speed of 225 kilometers per hour, making it one of the most destructive typhoons to hit Japan in a quarter-century. Tragically, this natural disaster claimed the lives of 77 individuals, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair. The image reveals an ominous cloud formation swirling around the central eye of the typhoon. This eye is formed when moist air is forced upwards, creating a low-pressure region that fuels the intensity and rotation within these massive storms. As we gaze at this photograph from space, we are reminded of both nature's awe-inspiring beauty and its devastating power. Typhoons like Tokage typically originate in areas with calm ocean conditions near the equator before gaining strength and momentum over warm waters. They pose significant threats to coastal regions across Asia-Pacific countries such as Japan due to their high wind speeds and heavy rainfall. This remarkable image serves as a reminder not only of our planet's intricate meteorological systems but also highlights humanity's vulnerability in face of such formidable forces unleashed by Mother Nature.
