Tufa towers at Lake Mono

Tufa towers at Lake Mono, California, USA. Tufa is a mineral deposit formed by the precipitation of calcium salts from water saturated with bicarbonates. These formations (top-right) were formed underwater when calcium-rich underwater springs mixed with the carbonate-rich lake water. They became exposed in the mid-20th century when the lakes tributaries were diverted to support the growth of Los Angeles, resulting in a drop in the lakes water level. The lake is an important habitat for bird species. Since the mid-1990s a campaign to protect the lake has resulted in an increase in its water level. Photographed in July

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Tufa towers at Lake Mono, California, USA. These unique formations, seen in the top-right corner of the image, were created underwater when calcium-rich springs mixed with carbonate-rich lake water. However, they only emerged into view during the mid-20th century due to a significant drop in the lake's water level caused by diverting its tributaries to support Los Angeles' growth. Lake Mono is not just an extraordinary geological wonder but also serves as a vital habitat for various bird species. Recognizing its ecological significance, efforts have been made since the mid-1990s to protect and restore this precious lake's water levels. The photograph was taken in July when nature thrives under warm summer skies. The scenic beauty of Lake Mono is enhanced by its surrounding environment - calm waters reflecting stunning scenery and lush grasses adorning its shores. This North American gem faces threats from human activities such as evaporation and altering the delicate balance of minerals within it. However, amidst these challenges lies hope for preservation as campaigns strive to safeguard this fragile ecosystem. The image captures both the vulnerability and resilience of Lake Mono while showcasing its remarkable tufa formations that stand tall like sentinels against time. Photographed by Science Photo Library, this print invites us to appreciate nature's wonders while reminding us of our responsibility to protect these invaluable treasures for generations to come.
