Tuberculosis bacteria, TEM

Tuberculosis bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. These Gram- positive rod-shaped bacteria are the main cause of human tuberculosis. If a bacterium enters the lungs in a droplet coughed or sneezed by an infected person, it multiplies to form a localized bacterial colony (primary tubercle). Normally the immune system destroys the tubercle. Sometimes, however, the bacteria then either spread to other parts of the body, which can be fatal, or lie dormant, only becoming active again several years later. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Tuberculosis bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, in all its intricate detail. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this coloured image reveals the Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria responsible for causing human tuberculosis. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, these bacteria can enter the lungs through droplets and multiply to form localized bacterial colonies known as primary tubercles. Normally, our immune system is able to destroy these tubercles. However, there are instances when the bacteria either spread to other parts of the body with fatal consequences or remain dormant for several years before becoming active again. The magnification used to capture this image remains unknown but it allows us to appreciate the complexity of these pathogenic microorganisms. The sectioned view provides a unique insight into their structure and composition. As we delve into bacteriology and infectious diseases, images like this play a crucial role in understanding how pathogens interact with our bodies at a microscopic level. This photograph serves as a reminder of both the beauty and danger that lie within our microbial world.
