Tropical Storm Iniki seen from space, STS-47

Tropical Storm Iniki seen from space. This storm originated as Hurricane Iniki, which caused serious damage on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in September 1992. At that time, the winds in the hurricane exceeded 240 km/h, and generated waves of over 5 metres in height. As the hurricane passed over Hawaii and into the cooler waters of the North Pacific, it began to weaken and was down-graded to Tropical Storm. This weakening is evidenced by the lack of thunderstorm activity near the centre of the cloud swirl. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Endeavour during Mission STS-47 of 12-20 September 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the immense power and beauty of Tropical Storm Iniki as seen from space during Mission STS-47. Originally a destructive hurricane that wreaked havoc on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in September 1992, Hurricane Iniki unleashed winds exceeding 240 km/h and towering waves reaching over 5 meters high. However, as it moved away from Hawaii and entered cooler waters in the North Pacific, this formidable force gradually weakened into a Tropical Storm. The evidence of this transformation is apparent in the image, with a noticeable absence of thunderstorm activity near the center of the swirling cloud formation. The once ferocious hurricane now displays a more subdued nature as it navigates through its final stages. This photograph was captured by the crew aboard Shuttle Endeavour during their mission STS-47. It serves as a reminder not only of our planet's vulnerability to extreme weather events but also highlights humanity's ability to witness and document these phenomena from outer space. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are reminded of both the awe-inspiring power contained within Earth's natural forces and our ongoing efforts to understand and predict them through meteorology. This stunning visual testament stands as an enduring tribute to science's continuous pursuit for knowledge about our ever-changing climate and weather patterns.
