Trieste bathyscape, artwork
Trieste bathyscape. Artwork of the bathyscape Trieste, a deep-sea submersible that was used to descend to the deepest known part of the Earths oceans. This is a point known as Challenger Deep, in the Mariana Trench near Guam in the Pacific Ocean. The record depth is around 10, 900 metres below sea level and was reached on 23 January 1960. The Trieste, about 18 metres long, was designed by the Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard. It consisted of a spherical pressure capsule, for a crew of two, below large float chambers. The Challenger Deep dive was carried out by Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Trieste bathyscape, an iconic piece of engineering that descended to the deepest part of Earth's oceans. Known as Challenger Deep, this point in the Mariana Trench near Guam holds the record for being approximately 10,900 meters below sea level. On January 23,1960, Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard's brainchild reached this astonishing depth. The Trieste bathyscape measured around 18 meters in length and featured a unique design comprising a spherical pressure capsule capable of accommodating a crew of two beneath large float chambers. It was during this historic dive that Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh fearlessly explored the mysterious depths. This artwork beautifully captures not only the technological marvel that is the Trieste but also pays homage to its historical significance. The illustration depicts a single sphere surrounded by floatation tanks against an oceanic backdrop—a symbol of human ingenuity pushing boundaries beneath the waves. With its intricate details and vivid colors, this image transports us back to one of humanity's greatest underwater achievements in the mid-20th century. It serves as a reminder of our relentless pursuit to unravel nature's secrets and expand our understanding of Earth's vast oceans through scientific exploration.
