Russian shuttle Buran & An-225 carrier flying

Piggy-back flight, Soviet-stlye. An Antonov An-225 cargo aircraft carrying the Buran space shuttle during a test flight. The An-225, called " Mryia" (Ukrainian for dream ), is the worlds largest aircraft, with a payload capacity of 200 tonnes. It was developed partly to support the Buran shuttle programme, ferrying the shuttle from its reserve landing sites at Vladivostok (far east coast) and Simferopol (Crimea) to the launch site at Baikonur, Kazakhstan. The US Space Shuttle programme uses a modified Boeing 747 airliner for the same purpose. Buran made its only space flight in 1988; the project was subsequently cancelled on cost grounds

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment in Soviet space history. Here, the majestic Russian shuttle Buran is seen soaring through the skies, piggybacked on the colossal wings of the Antonov An-225 carrier aircraft during a test flight. Known as "Mryia" or "Dream" in Ukrainian, this awe-inspiring aircraft holds the title of being the largest in the world with an incredible payload capacity of 200 tonnes. Developed specifically to support the ambitious Buran shuttle program, this flying duo played a crucial role in transporting Buran from its reserve landing sites at Vladivostok and Simferopol to its launch site at Baikonur, Kazakhstan. In comparison, their American counterparts relied on modified Boeing 747 airliners for similar purposes. Buran itself made its sole journey into space back in 1988 before facing cancellation due to financial constraints. Nevertheless, this image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination within manned spaceflight programs. As we gaze upon this photograph print by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both Russia's significant contributions to space exploration and the immense scale required for such groundbreaking endeavors. It stands as a symbol of scientific progress and ambition that continues to inspire future generations fascinated by our vast universe.
