Torso blood vessels

Torso blood vessels. Historical artwork of a human torso that has been dissected to show major blood vessels. The heart (upper centre) pumps blood to the lungs on either side (to be oxygenated), and then receives the blood returning from the lungs and pumps it round the body through the aorta (the main body artery). Arteries branch out to the neck and arms (top) from the aortic arch. The rest of the aorta passes behind the heart and takes blood downwards to the abdomen and legs. The two kidneys (centre left and centre right) clean the blood. Ureters descend from the kidneys to the bladder (round, bottom centre). Veins return blood to the main body vein (the vena cava, left of aorta) that channels the blood back into the heart. The lung and kidney at left have been dissected

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork showcases the intricate network of blood vessels within the human torso. With meticulous detail, this illustration reveals the complexity and beauty of our circulatory system. At the center, we witness the heart, tirelessly pumping oxygenated blood to both lungs on either side for purification. The aorta, our main body artery, branches out towards the neck and arms before descending behind the heart to supply vital nutrients and oxygen to our abdomen and legs. The two kidneys take center stage as they diligently cleanse our blood, while ureters gracefully descend from them towards the bladder at the bottom center of this image. Veins play their crucial role in returning deoxygenated blood back into circulation through the vena cava located left of the aorta. With its dissection-like appearance, this artwork offers an unparalleled glimpse into human anatomy. It serves as a testament to centuries of scientific exploration and understanding that have shaped modern medicine. This print not only captures anatomical accuracy but also evokes a sense of wonder at how intricately interconnected our bodies truly are. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Science Photo Library's collection, we are reminded of both our fragility and resilience as living beings. It is an awe-inspiring reminder that beneath our skin lies a world teeming with life-sustaining processes that keep us alive each day.
