Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis. Artwork of the open mouth and throat of a patient with inflamed tonsils. They are flecked with infected yellow patches, due to tonsillitis, an infection usually caused by streptococci bacteria. Tonsils are oval-shaped masses of spongy lymphoid tissue on either side of the back of the mouth. They help the body respond to infection, producing antibodies for the immune system and trapping and destroying micro-organisms that enter the throat. Tonsillitis causes a sore throat, fever and difficulty with swallowing. Treatment involves a course of antibiotic drugs. If it is recurrent and severe, then the tonsils may need to be surgically removed (tonsillectomy)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the intricate details of a patient's open mouth and throat affected by tonsillitis. The inflamed tonsils, depicted as oval-shaped masses of spongy lymphoid tissue, are adorned with infected yellow patches caused by streptococci bacteria. Tonsils play a vital role in our immune system, producing antibodies to combat infections and trapping micro-organisms that enter the throat. Tonsillitis manifests itself through symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, and difficulty swallowing. Fortunately, this condition can be effectively treated with a course of antibiotic drugs. However, in cases where it becomes recurrent and severe, surgical removal of the tonsils may be necessary. The artist skillfully portrays the pathology behind this common infection while highlighting its impact on the human body. This thought-provoking illustration serves as an educational tool for medical professionals and students alike. Science Photo Library continues to excel in providing remarkable visual resources that bridge artistry with scientific knowledge. Their dedication to capturing these microscopic worlds within our bodies allows us to better understand diseases like tonsillitis and their treatment options.
