Tokamak-15 fusion research reactor, Kurchatov Inst

Nuclear fusion research. View of Tokamak 15, a nuclear fusion research reactor. The ring-shaped tokamak design (also known as a torus) is most favoured by nuclear fusion researchers. The ring contains a plasma, a mixture of deuterium and tritium at a temperature of up to 100 million Celsius. To keep the plasma confined and away from the walls of the tokamak, very powerful magnets enclose the reactor vessel. At sufficiently high temperatures, the deuterium and tritium nuclei fuse, generating helium and energetic neutrons. It is these neutrons which carry energy out of the reactor. Photographed at the Kurchatov Institute, Moscow. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © RIA NOVOSTI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the Tokamak-15 fusion research reactor, located at the prestigious Kurchatov Institute in Moscow. As a hub for nuclear fusion research, this cutting-edge facility houses one of the most favored designs among scientists - the ring-shaped tokamak, also known as a torus. Within this remarkable structure lies a plasma composed of deuterium and tritium, reaching temperatures soaring up to an astonishing 100 million Celsius. To ensure that the plasma remains confined and separated from the walls of the tokamak, immensely powerful magnets enclose the reactor vessel. At these extreme temperatures, something extraordinary occurs: deuterium and tritium nuclei fuse together, resulting in helium production alongside energetic neutrons. It is precisely these highly charged neutrons that carry substantial amounts of energy out of the reactor. The photograph captures not only the technological marvels within but also symbolizes Russia's significant contributions to advancements in nuclear fusion research. The Kurchatov Institute stands as a beacon for scientific exploration and innovation in pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. This awe-inspiring image serves as a reminder that through relentless dedication and ingenuity, humanity continues to push boundaries towards unlocking limitless clean energy sources for our future generations.
