Thyroid gland, light micrograph

Thyroid gland. Coloured light micrograph of a thyroid gland showing the follicles. The follicles are lined by a single layer of cuboidal epithelial cells (purple, dark nuclei), which synthesise and secrete the iodine-containing hormones T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). The thyroid follicle is filled with a glycoprotein substance called thyroglobulin or thyroid colloid (pink), which is a storage form of the thyroid hormones. When actively secreting hormones the lining cells are large and cuboidal, when less active the follicles are distended and the secretory cells flattened. Magnification: x800 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and detailed print captures the intricate beauty of the thyroid gland, a vital organ in our bodies. The image showcases a transverse section of the gland, revealing its fascinating internal structure. The follicles, seen as round structures, are lined by a single layer of cuboidal epithelial cells that appear purple under this light microscope. These specialized cells play a crucial role in synthesizing and secreting two important hormones: T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). These iodine-containing hormones regulate various metabolic processes within our body. Stored within the thyroid follicle is thyroglobulin or thyroid colloid, depicted here in striking pink color. This glycoprotein substance serves as a storage form for these essential hormones. The magnification used for this print allows us to appreciate the fine details present within this microscopic world. When actively producing hormones, the lining cells become larger and more cuboidal in shape; however, when less active, they flatten out and cause distension of the follicles. This image not only highlights the anatomical features but also provides insight into endocrinology – specifically how hormonal secretion occurs within this remarkable gland. It serves as a testament to both biological complexity and scientific innovation captured by Science Photo Library's exceptional work.
