Thrust SSC supersonic car tests C016 / 2052

Thrust SSC supersonic car tests. Testing took place at Farnborough, UK, in October 1996. On October 15th 1997, in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA, Thrust SSC became the first land vehicle to break the sound barrier. Piloted by Andy Green, Thrust SSC achieved speeds of over 1227 kilometres per hour (kph) over a mile and over 1223 kph over a kilometre, breaking the speed of sound on both runs. Team leader Richard Noble had himself set a land speed record in 1983

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Thrust SSC supersonic car during its testing phase in Farnborough, UK, back in October 1996. The image captures a moment of groundbreaking engineering and technological advancement as this remarkable vehicle prepared to shatter records. Led by team leader Richard Noble, who had previously set a land speed record himself in 1983, the Thrust SSC was piloted by Andy Green. The true triumph came on October 15th, 1997, at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, USA. With Andy Green at the helm once again, this extraordinary machine became the first land vehicle to break through the sound barrier. Surpassing speeds of an astonishing 1227 kilometers per hour (kph) over a mile and over 1223 kph over a kilometer on both runs, it achieved what was once deemed impossible. This historic moment marked a significant milestone not only for British engineering but also for transportation technology worldwide. The sheer power and precision exhibited by Thrust SSC demonstrated humanity's relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries and exploring new frontiers. In this photograph captured by National Physical Laboratory's lens under Crown Copyright from Science Photo Library, we witness an emblematic snapshot that encapsulates decades of research and development culminating in an awe-inspiring feat that will forever be etched into history books.
