Thermogram of head

SEPT 2006 Thermogram of a head. Thermography is an imaging technique for mapping the heat distribution over the surface of a body. Here, the colour-coded image shows temperature variation in 0.1 degree celsius steps (see scale at left), where blue corresponds to the colder areas and yellow corresponds to the hotter areas. Thermography has proved useful in manufacturing and medicine (where it may reveal disorders such as tumours and arthritis). It was developed by the military in the 1970s and 1980s to assist night vision; the solid state sensors used in the thermograph can detect infra-red radiation even in darkness and/or smoke

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a thermogram of a head, taken in September 2006. Thermography, an innovative imaging technique, is employed to map the heat distribution across the surface of the body. The mesmerizing color-coded image reveals temperature variations in precise 0.1-degree Celsius increments (as indicated by the scale on the left). In this visual representation, colder areas are depicted in soothing shades of blue while hotter regions radiate vibrant hues of yellow. Originally developed by the military during the 1970s and 1980s to enhance night vision capabilities, thermography has found remarkable applications in both manufacturing and medicine. By detecting infrared radiation even amidst darkness or smoke using solid-state sensors, it has become an invaluable tool for identifying disorders such as tumors and arthritis within the human body. The subject captured here is a male individual with his anatomy displayed through this striking thermogram. This unique imaging method allows us to visualize skin temperature patterns that would otherwise remain hidden from our naked eyes. As we delve into this thought-provoking photograph provided by Science Photo Library, let us appreciate how science continues to unravel new possibilities through advancements like thermography – offering insights into our own bodies and revolutionizing various fields without limitations imposed by commercial interests.
