Thames Frost Fair 1684

View of the Frost Fair on the Thames looking downstream towards London Bridge during the Great Frost of 1683-4 when the river was completely frozen for two months. It was the worst recorded frost in England and similar conditions affected much of Europe as well. The period between the 15th and early 19th century was known as the Little Ice Age because of the severity of the climate, particularly the winters. As the Thames was then wider and flowed more slowly, it froze over on numerous occasions with impromptu fairs often being set up, offering a wide variety of activities and amusements

Climate Change Flow Frost River Thames Winter 1684 Tideway

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library takes us back to the winter of 1684, during the Great Frost that gripped England and much of Europe. The image showcases a breathtaking view of the Thames Frost Fair, with London Bridge visible in the distance. It was an extraordinary period when the river froze completely for an unprecedented two months. The severity of this frost was part of a larger climatic phenomenon known as the Little Ice Age, which lasted from the 15th to early 19th century. Winters were particularly harsh during this time, and frozen rivers became a common occurrence. The slower flow and wider expanse of the Thames made it susceptible to freezing over multiple times. These icy conditions gave rise to impromptu fairs on its surface, offering a wide array of activities and amusements for all who dared venture onto its frozen domain. This unique spectacle attracted people from far and wide, creating a vibrant atmosphere amidst nature's frozen masterpiece. As we reflect on this historical moment captured by Science Photo Library, it serves as a reminder not only of our planet's ever-changing climate but also how humans have adapted throughout history. The resilience and ingenuity displayed during these frost fairs are testament to our ability to find joy even in extreme circumstances. Let this mesmerizing image transport you back in time, where ice transformed into playgrounds and laughter echoed across frozen waters – an unforgettable chapter in both natural history and human experience.
