Technician uses infra-red scanner on forged art
Art forgery detection. Technician operating an infra-red scanner as it illuminates a section of a forged painting. This is a copy of a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). Once the whole of the painting has been scanned, the infra- red image produced may reveal previously hidden features of the painting, for example, underlying sketches or areas where the paint has been retouched. This work is being carried out at the Doerner Institute in Munich, Germany, which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester. The Institute specializes in the detection of art forgeries by various imaging techniques and chemical analyses

In this photo print, we witness a skilled technician utilizing an infra-red scanner to unravel the secrets concealed within a forged masterpiece. The art forgery detection process is in full swing as the scanner's illuminating beams shed light on a section of Lucas Cranach the Elder's renowned painting. Within the hallowed halls of Munich's Doerner Institute, under the guidance of esteemed Dr Andreas Burmester, experts specialize in unmasking deceptive imitations through cutting-edge imaging techniques and chemical analyses. As this diligent technician meticulously scans every inch of the artwork, an infra-red image emerges, unveiling previously hidden features that lay dormant beneath layers of deceit. The significance lies not only in exposing counterfeit creations but also in uncovering forgotten narratives woven into these masterpieces. Underlying sketches and areas where paint has been retouched come to life once more, offering glimpses into an artist's creative process or perhaps even shedding light on historical events captured by their brushstrokes. This non-destructive testing method employed by the Doerner Institute exemplifies how technology can be harnessed to safeguard artistic integrity. By peering beyond what meets the eye, they ensure that genuine works endure while forgeries crumble under scrutiny. Through their unwavering dedication and expertise, these guardians protect our cultural heritage from falling victim to fraudulent schemes that seek to exploit both artists' legacies and collectors' trust.
