Taste bud, SEM

Taste bud. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a taste bud (centre) on a tongue. This is the centre of the round tongue structure called a fungiform papilla. These are less numerous than the surrounding elongated filiform papillae. The tongue papillae are covered by the scaly squamous epithelial cells seen surrounding the central fungiform papilla. The taste bud itself is a neuro-epithelial cell that reacts to chemicals in food, transmitting nerve impulses to the brain. These impulses are processed to form the sensation of taste. Numerous bacteria (green/yellow) cover the filiform papillae. Magnification unknown

Bacteria Epithelial Epithelium Filiform Fungiform Histological Histology Papilla Papillae Sense Sensory Squamous Taste Bud Tissue Tongue Cells

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate details of a taste bud, as seen through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Located at the center of a round tongue structure known as a fungiform papilla, this taste bud is responsible for our sense of taste. Surrounding it are elongated filiform papillae, which are more abundant in number. The surface of these tongue papillae is covered by scaly squamous epithelial cells, creating an interesting visual contrast. The main focus of the image is the neuro-epithelial cell that forms the taste bud itself. This specialized cell reacts to various chemicals present in food and transmits nerve impulses to our brain. It is through this complex process that we experience different tastes. Adding further intrigue to the scene, numerous bacteria can be observed covering the filiform papillae in shades of green and yellow. These microscopic organisms play their own role within our oral ecosystem. With its high magnification level undisclosed, this SEM image offers us an up-close glimpse into one aspect of human biology - specifically highlighting healthy tissue and sensory function within our bodies. Its histological detail provides valuable insights into how we perceive flavors and underscores the fascinating complexity underlying even seemingly simple experiences like tasting food.
