Tamerlane, Turko-Mongol emperor

Tamerlane (1336-1405), Turko-Mongol emperor. Also known as Timur, Tamerlanes people were descendents of the Mongols who had settled in Persian areas and become linguistically Turkic. Tamerlane conquered an area centred on modern-day Iran, establishing the Timurid Empire. This woodcut portrait is from the 1575 Basle edition of Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium (Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War) by the Italian historian and biographer Paolo Giovio (1483-1552)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut portrait captures the essence of Tamerlane, the legendary Turko-Mongol emperor who left an indelible mark on history. Born as Timur in 1336, his people were descendants of Mongols who had settled in Persian territories and adopted Turkic language. Renowned for his military prowess and strategic brilliance, Tamerlane conquered vast regions centered around modern-day Iran, establishing the mighty Timurid Empire. Created by Italian historian Paolo Giovio and artist Christoffel van Sichem for their renowned publication "Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War" this art piece from the 1575 Basle edition is a testament to Tamerlane's power and influence. Rendered in monochrome with meticulous detail, it portrays a commanding figure exuding authority and strength. As one gazes upon this historic masterpiece, they are transported back to the tumultuous 14th century when empires clashed and kingdoms rose and fell. Tamerlane stands tall as an embodiment of leadership amidst chaos – a symbol of ambition, conquest, and political acumen. This artwork not only celebrates Tamerlane's legacy but also serves as a reminder of humanity's fascination with great leaders throughout time. It immortalizes an era where boundaries were redrawn through forceful might yet acknowledges the cultural fusion that defined Central Asia during that period. Intriguingly captured within these lines etched on wood lies the story of a man whose name echoes through centuries – Tamerlane: warrior king, conqueror extraordinaire, master strategist; forever etched into history's annals as one of its most formidable rulers.
