Sun structure
Suns interior. Computer model of the variations in the speed of sound in the Sun, based on data taken by the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft. The colours in the cut- away portion of the Sun show the observed speed of sound relative to the speed predicted by a theoretical solar model. Red regions have a higher speed of sound than expected, and in blue regions it is lower than expected. This indicates that the red and blue regions are respectively hotter and cooler than predicted. Data gathered by SOHOs MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) and VIRGO (Variability of Solar Irradiance and Gravity Oscillations) instruments

Astrophysical Astrophysics Computer Inside Interior Internal Soho Solar Sonic Sound Speed Imager
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of the Sun's interior, revealing its hidden secrets through a computer model. Based on data collected by the SOHO spacecraft, which stands for Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, this image depicts variations in the speed of sound within our star. The cut-away portion of the Sun is adorned with vibrant colors that represent deviations in sound speed compared to what was predicted by a theoretical solar model. Regions highlighted in red indicate a higher speed of sound than expected, suggesting hotter areas within the Sun. Conversely, blue regions signify a lower speed of sound than anticipated, indicating cooler sections. This remarkable discovery challenges previous assumptions about our closest star's internal dynamics and temperature distribution. The data used to create this visual masterpiece was gathered by two instruments aboard SOHO: MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) and VIRGO (Variability of Solar Irradiance and Gravity Oscillations). As we delve deeper into understanding these sonic fluctuations within the Sun's core, we unlock new insights into astrophysics and astronomy. This awe-inspiring image serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our vast universe. It reminds us that even celestial bodies as familiar as our own sun still hold mysteries waiting to be unraveled by scientific exploration.
