Subreflector of upgraded Arecibo radio telescope

Arecibo subreflector system. View of the 90-tonne dome housing the new gregorian subreflector system installed in 1997 for the Arecibo radio telescope. Note the people at upper right. This largest radio telescope in the world is situated in a natural crater in the mountains of Puerto Rico. The new subreflector system with two mirrors is suspended 130 metres above the fixed dish. It can send and receive signals to examine planets & asteroids, & also analyse Earths upper atmosphere. To scan the sky the dome is steered above the 305m dish. The Arecibo upgrade includes a 16m high buffer screen around the dish and a new radar transmitter that increases Arecibos power by 20 times

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable subreflector of the upgraded Arecibo radio telescope, a true marvel in the field of astronomy. The image captures the awe-inspiring 90-tonne dome that houses the cutting-edge Gregorian subreflector system, which was installed back in 1997. As we gaze upon this photograph, our attention is drawn to a group of people standing at the upper right corner, providing us with a sense of scale and emphasizing just how immense this structure truly is. Nestled within a natural crater amidst Puerto Rico's majestic mountains, this colossal radio telescope holds the prestigious title of being the largest one on Earth. Suspended an astonishing 130 meters above its fixed dish are two mirrors that form part of the new subreflector system. This advanced technology enables it to transmit and receive signals for planetary and asteroid exploration while also analyzing Earth's upper atmosphere. To scan vast expanses of sky, engineers expertly steer the dome above Arecibo's massive 305-meter dish. Notably, as part of its upgrade process, Arecibo boasts additional features such as a towering 16-meter buffer screen surrounding its dish and an enhanced radar transmitter that amplifies its power by an astounding twentyfold. With its unrivaled capabilities and state-of-the-art equipment, Arecibo plays an integral role in various astronomical endeavors ranging from SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) research to profound studies in astrophysics and radio astronomy.
