Storm clouds in North Atlantic, from space, 61-A

Storm clouds seen from space. This photograph shows the clouds associated with a cyclonic disturbance. This is found near a low pressure region, and used to be called a mid-lattitude cyclone. If the depression at the centre of the storm has a very low pressure, it may lead to relatively violent storms with high winds. The centre of this system is seen as the spiral of clouds just below the Earths limb near top centre. This storm was seen in the North Atlantic Ocean by the crew of Shuttle Challenger, during Mission 61-A of 30 October - 6 November 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Storm clouds in North Atlantic, from space, 61-A" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the power and beauty of nature's fury. Taken by the crew of Shuttle Challenger during Mission 61-A in November 1985, this image showcases the awe-inspiring sight of storm clouds associated with a cyclonic disturbance. The photograph highlights the distinct characteristics of these mid-latitude cyclones, which form near low-pressure regions. The spiral pattern of clouds at the center reveals the presence of a deep depression with extremely low pressure. Such conditions can give rise to violent storms characterized by high winds and intense atmospheric activity. From its vantage point in space, this snapshot provides valuable insights into meteorology and cloud types. It serves as a reminder that our planet is constantly shaped by dynamic weather systems capable of both nurturing life and unleashing destructive forces. As we gaze upon this remarkable Earth imagery, we are reminded of humanity's quest for knowledge and understanding. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment in time, allowing us to appreciate the intricate workings of our climate system while marveling at nature's raw power. Let this photograph serve as a testament to our ongoing exploration and appreciation for Earth's ever-changing weather phenomena.
