Stoma of a pea leaf

False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a stomatal complex in a young leaf of the pea plant, Pisum sativum. The picture shows two developing guard cells separated by a cell wall which will split to form the stomatal opening. Both cells are dominated by a large nucleus containing clumps of chromatin (red). Stomata are pores in the epidermis of the leaf; they regulate the exchange of water & gases between the atmosphere & the leaf interior. When the guard cells are full of water the pore is open; when it loses water the pore closes. Closure is a natural response to darkness & drought. Magnification: x1500 at 35mm size, x2600 at 6x4.5cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.11, page 73

Guard Cell Pisum Sativum Stoma False Coloured

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a pea leaf's stoma, captured through a false-colour transmission electron micrograph. The image reveals two developing guard cells, separated by a cell wall that will eventually split to form the stomatal opening. Dominating both cells is a large nucleus containing clumps of chromatin, depicted in striking red hues. Stomata are essential pores found on the leaf's epidermis, acting as gatekeepers for regulating the exchange of water and gases between the atmosphere and the leaf interior. When filled with water, these guard cells cause the pore to open; conversely, when they lose water, it prompts closure. This natural response serves as protection during darkness and drought. The magnification level employed in capturing this mesmerizing snapshot is truly remarkable: x1500 at 35mm size or an even more detailed x2600 at 6x4.5cm size. Published in "MICROCOSMOS" specifically figure 4.11 on page 73, this photograph from Science Photo Library offers an immersive glimpse into nature's wonders. Immerse yourself in this botanical marvel encompassing elements of nature photography and scientific exploration—where vibrant colors meet microscopic details—to appreciate how plants ingeniously adapt to their surroundings for survival and growth.
