US stenciller from the mid-20th century

US stenciling machine from the mid-20th century. This stenciling machine, made in the US, uses Cyrillic lettering. The dial is turned to select the required letter, and the red lever (right) is used to produce the letter on the printing template. The template is then used to mass produce further copies on paper. Also called mimeography, this technique, first patented in 1876, was eventually supplanted by the use of photocopiers. This machine is part of a historical exhibition at the Polytechnical Museum, Moscow, Russia. Photographed in 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of mid-20th century technology - a US stenciling machine with a unique twist. Manufactured in the United States, this particular machine stands out for its use of Cyrillic lettering, adding an intriguing international touch to its functionality. The image captures the intricate details of the stenciling machine. A dial is prominently displayed, allowing users to select their desired letter with precision. To bring that chosen letter to life on the printing template, one simply needs to engage the red lever positioned on the right side of the machine. This ingenious mechanism enabled mass production by transferring letters onto paper through carefully crafted templates. Once hailed as mimeography, this technique was patented back in 1876 and played a significant role in reproducing documents before photocopiers took over. The photograph transports us back in time and offers a glimpse into how technological advancements shaped our history. Preserved within Moscow's Polytechnical Museum, this extraordinary artifact forms part of an enthralling historical exhibition. Captured in 2006 by Science Photo Library, it serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation during the 20th century. As we observe this relic from another era, we are reminded of how far we have come technologically while appreciating the foundations laid by inventions like these stencil machines that paved the way for modern printing techniques.
