Star cluster NGC 2477

Open star cluster NGC 2477. True-colour optical image of the open star cluster NGC 2477 (upper centre) in the constellation Puppis. NGC 2477 contains around 300 stars, and is very dense for an open cluster. It was only distinguished from a globular cluster by spectroscopic methods. Globular clusters contain very old stars, whereas the stars in NGC 2477, as in all other open clusters, are very young. All open clusters are thought to contain stars which formed together from the same cloud of gas and dust. The blue star just below NGC 2477 is b Puppis. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning star cluster NGC 2477, located in the constellation Puppis. With its true-colour optical image, this open star cluster appears prominently in the upper centre of the frame. What makes NGC 2477 particularly intriguing is its density, which is unusually high for an open cluster. In fact, it was only through spectroscopic methods that scientists were able to differentiate it from a globular cluster. Unlike globular clusters that consist of ancient stars, NGC 2477 boasts a population of youthful stars like other open clusters. Believed to have formed from the same cloud of gas and dust, all open clusters are home to stars that share a common origin story. This particular image also captures b Puppis, a striking blue star situated just below NGC 2477. The mesmerizing composition was created by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope using both blue and red light filters. The result is an awe-inspiring visual representation that allows us to marvel at the beauty and complexity of our universe. This remarkable photograph comes courtesy of Science Photo Library—a testament to their dedication in providing breathtaking imagery within fields such as astronomy and cosmology.
