Spruce needle

Spruce needle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a needle of a sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis). The sunken pits contain closed pores called stomata. Each stoma can be opened and closed by the two guard cells (light green) on either side of it. This allows the exchange of gases between the plant and the air to be controlled. The sunken stomata and the layer of wax (pale green) covering the surface of the needle minimise water loss from the tree. This conifer is native to North America, especially the north-west. Magnification: x380 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a spruce needle. Under the lens of a scanning electron microscope, we are able to witness the remarkable details that make up this tiny structure. The surface of the needle is adorned with sunken pits, each housing closed pores known as stomata. These stomata play a crucial role in regulating gas exchange between the plant and its environment. Flanked by two guard cells in light green, every stoma has the ability to open and close, allowing for precise control over this essential process. To ensure efficient water management, both the sunken stomata and a delicate layer of wax in pale green work together to minimize water loss from the tree. This adaptation is vital for survival in arid conditions or during periods of drought. The sitka spruce, native to North America's north-western regions, exhibits these fascinating characteristics on its needles. With a magnification level of x380 at 6x7cm size, this image provides us with an extraordinary glimpse into nature's ingenious design. This mesmerizing photograph serves as a testament to the wonders found within botany and biology while reminding us of our planet's incredible diversity and adaptability.
