Sprawlita cockroach robot

Sprawlita cockroach robot, running outdoors. Sprawlita is a hexapod (six-legged) robot that mimics (biomimetics) the running ability of cockroaches. Each leg is a pneumatic piston powered by compressed air and driven by a servo motor. They move as groups of alternating tripods (two legs on one side and one on the opposite side). This produces a bouncing gait similar to insects and other multi-legged animals. The low, squat body ensures it is stable enough to avoid stumbling over rough terrain. Sprawlita is able to run at 3 body-lengths per second. This compares to cockroaches, which can run at up to 50 body-lengths per second. Photographed in 2005 at Stanford Unversity, California, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures the Sprawlita cockroach robot in action, as it scampers outdoors with remarkable agility. Developed at Stanford University in California, USA, this hexapod marvels in its ability to mimic the running prowess of actual cockroaches through biomimetics. The six legs of Sprawlita are powered by pneumatic pistons fueled by compressed air and driven by servo motors. Moving in groups of alternating tripods - two legs on one side and one on the opposite side - it effortlessly replicates the bouncing gait observed in insects and other multi-legged creatures. With its low-profile body design, Sprawlita ensures stability even over rough terrains, preventing any stumbling mishaps along its path. Although not quite matching the breathtaking speed of real cockroaches that can run up to 50 body-lengths per second, this technological wonder manages an impressive pace of three body-lengths per second. This photograph was taken back in September 2005 at Stanford University's enthralling robotics lab. It showcases the intricate joint movements and pneumatic mechanisms that enable Sprawlita's seamless locomotion. Combining elements from both engineering and biology fields such as biomechanics and biomimetics, this robotic creation exemplifies cutting-edge technology fused with nature-inspired innovation. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring image capturing a moment where machine meets motion; a testament to human ingenuity pushing boundaries towards advancements in robotics research without commercial intent or mention thereof.
