Spirochete bacteria, TEM

Spirochete bacteria, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Spirochetes are bacteria with helically coiled cells. They contain filamentous flagella (axial filaments) that run lengthwise between the cell membrane and outer membrane. The twisting motion of the flagella allows the bacterium to move about. Here however, the bacteria have been damaged, causing the flagella to break away from the sheaths. Disease causing members of this phylum include Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease and Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis. Magnification: x13, 000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of Spirochete bacteria, captured through a transmission electron microscope. The vibrant colors bring to life the helically coiled cells of these fascinating microorganisms. Spirochetes are known for their unique structure, with filamentous flagella that run lengthwise between the cell membrane and outer membrane. These flagella enable them to move in a twisting motion, granting them remarkable mobility. However, in this particular image, we can observe that some bacteria have suffered damage, causing their flagella to break away from their protective sheaths. It is important to note that while spirochetes may appear mesmerizing under the lens, they can also be pathogenic. Members of this phylum include Borrelia burgdorferi, responsible for Lyme disease, and Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis. Understanding the biology and behavior of these bacteria is crucial in combating such diseases. With a magnification level of x13,000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this print allows us to appreciate the intricacies of these spiral-shaped microorganisms on a whole new level. It serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity found within our microscopic world – an awe-inspiring testament to nature's diversity and adaptability.
