Spirochaete bacteria, Treponema

Spirochaete. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of two spirochaete (Treponema sp. ) bacteria. These bacteria are from the mouth of a person with periodontal disease. These elongated spiral-shaped bacteria (spirochaetes) lack rigid cell walls. Pathogenic species of Treponema include T. pallidum which causes syphilis; T. carateum which causes the skin disease " pinta" in tropical America; and T. pertenue which causes yaws in Africa. In syphilis, the bacteria may be found in most parts of the body. Negatively stained. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of Spirochaete bacteria, specifically Treponema species. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), two elongated spiral-shaped spirochaetes are beautifully captured. These particular bacteria were discovered in the mouth of an individual suffering from periodontal disease. What makes these spirochaetes fascinating is their lack of rigid cell walls, setting them apart from other bacterial types. Among the pathogenic species within the Treponema genus, three notable ones include T. pallidum, responsible for causing syphilis; T. carateum, which leads to a skin disease called "pinta" in tropical America; and T. pertenue, known for causing yaws primarily in Africa. Syphilis caused by T. pallidum can affect various parts of the body and has been extensively studied throughout history due to its impact on human health. The negative staining technique used in this image adds depth and contrast to highlight these remarkable microbes under magnification—although specific details regarding magnification remain unknown. Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable resources like this one that contribute to our understanding of bacteriology, microbiology, and infectious diseases such as syphilis. This print serves as a reminder of how much there still is left to explore within the microscopic world of bacteria and their role in human health and disease prevention.
