Spider mouthparts, SEM Z430 / 0436

Spider mouthparts. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mouthparts of a house spider (Tegenaria sp.). The head of the spider is at upper centre. Several pairs of eyes (round) are on top of its head. Below these are the chelicerae (large pincers), ending in poison fangs (orange, lower centre) that are used to paralyse its prey, mostly insects or other small invertebrates. Either side of the head and extending forwards to bottom centre, are the two pedipalps. These are sensory structures used for manipulation, such as during feeding. The tops of two legs are at lower right and left. Magnification: x20 when printed 10cm high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and deadly mouthparts of a house spider. The colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the astonishing details of this arachnid's predatory features. At the upper center, we can see the spider's head, which is adorned with several pairs of round eyes that provide it with keen vision. Beneath these eyes lie the chelicerae, large pincers that serve as formidable weapons for capturing prey. These chelicerae end in vibrant orange poison fangs, which are used to paralyze its victims – primarily insects and other small invertebrates. Positioned on either side of the head and extending towards the bottom center are two pedipalps, sensory structures that aid in manipulation during feeding. The lower right and left corners reveal glimpses of two legs, emphasizing just how minuscule yet powerful this creature is. With a magnification level of x20 when printed at 10cm high, every minute detail becomes apparent. This image not only highlights nature's incredible diversity but also serves as a reminder of spiders' vital role as hunters within ecosystems. Their carnivorous nature and poisonous capabilities make them fascinating subjects for zoological study. Captured by POWER AND SYRED/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this photograph offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into the world of arachnids while showcasing their mesmerizing mouthparts up close.
