Sperm tails, TEM
Sperm tails. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of cross sections through sperm tails. A sperms tails ability to move is partly due to the arrangement of microtubules (part of the cells cytoskeleton, dark rings) within the tail. The microtubules are arranged in a central axoneme with two central single microtubules and nine peripheral double microtubules. Surrounding the axoneme is a layer of mitochondria, which provide the energy for movement. Finally the tail is wrapped in a protective outer sheath. Magnification: x8000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and detailed print captures the intricate structure of sperm tails, revealing the fascinating biology behind their ability to move. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this coloured micrograph showcases cross sections of sperm tails in all their glory. The key to a sperm's motility lies in its arrangement of microtubules, which form part of the cell's cytoskeleton. In this image, we can see dark rings representing these microtubules within the tail. The central axoneme consists of two single microtubules surrounded by nine double microtubules, providing support and flexibility for movement. To fuel this motion, surrounding the axoneme is a layer of mitochondria - powerhouses that generate energy for the sperm's journey towards fertilization. Finally, a protective outer sheath wraps around the entire tail to ensure its integrity during navigation through various environments. With a magnification level of x8000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide, this print offers an up-close look at multiple aspects of sperm anatomy. It not only highlights their biological complexity but also underscores their crucial role as male reproductive cells or gametes. This image from Science Photo Library serves as both an educational tool and an artistic representation showcasing nature's incredible design within our own bodies.
