Speed camera by side of dual carriageway

Speed trap. An automatic camera system used to photograph vehicles which are exceeding a local speed limit. The camera may be triggered by sensors in the road or by a radar device. The camera lens is at top left of the grey box. At bottom right of the box is an electronic flash unit used at night. The photograph shows the number plate of the vehicle, and has details encoded on the frame (time, date, location and speed). The film is recovered and processed at regular intervals, and notices are issued to drivers. The photograph is (as of 1993) admissible in court as evidence in the case of disputed offences. Photographed in England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful tool in the battle against speeding on our roads. A speed camera, strategically placed by the side of a busy dual carriageway, stands as a silent sentinel, ready to catch those who defy local speed limits. The grey box houses an automatic camera system that springs into action when triggered by sensors embedded in the road or radar devices. At the top left of the box, we see the camera lens peering out, ever watchful for offenders. To ensure accurate documentation even at night, an electronic flash unit is positioned at the bottom right corner. This flash illuminates license plates and captures crucial details encoded on each frame: time, date, location, and most importantly - speed. The film inside this unassuming device is regularly recovered and processed to hold drivers accountable for their actions. Notices are then issued to those caught exceeding legal limits. Remarkably enough, since 1993 these photographs have been admissible evidence in court proceedings involving disputed offences. Transportation authorities across England rely on this technology to enforce traffic regulations effectively. It serves as both a deterrent and an instrument of justice in maintaining safer roads for all motorists. As we gaze upon this image from Science Photo Library's collection without commercial intent or mention of any specific company name associated with it; let us reflect on how such advancements contribute to law enforcement efforts and ultimately foster responsible driving habits among individuals traversing our highways
