Crescent Earth

Crescent Earth. View of the Earth taken from the Apollo 4 spacecraft, in orbit 17, 960 kilometres above the surface. The large amount of cloud cover makes it difficult to identify any surface features in the sunlit side. Apollo 4 was an unmanned test of the Apollo/Saturn V launcher combination. It was launched on 9 November 1967 into a low orbit. The third stage was then used to climb to over 18, 000 kilometers before heading back to Earth. The speed at re-entry was similar to that expected for Apollo flights returning from the Moon. This test validated the design of the crew capsule. The splashdown of Apollo 4 was on 9 November 1967

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Crescent Earth" offers a mesmerizing view of our planet taken from the Apollo 4 spacecraft. Captured while orbiting 17,960 kilometers above the Earth's surface, this image showcases a stunning crescent-shaped Earth against the backdrop of space. The sunlit side is veiled by an extensive layer of clouds, making it challenging to discern any surface features. Apollo 4 was an unmanned test mission that aimed to evaluate the performance of the Apollo/Saturn V launcher combination. Launched on November 9,1967, into a low orbit, it utilized its third stage to ascend over 18,000 kilometers before returning back towards our home planet. During re-entry, Apollo 4 reached speeds similar to those anticipated for future lunar missions. This pioneering test flight successfully validated the design and functionality of the crew capsule used in subsequent Apollo missions. It marked another significant milestone in humanity's quest for space exploration and deepened our understanding of spacecraft capabilities. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both our smallness within the vast cosmos and our boundless curiosity about distant worlds beyond ours. This awe-inspiring image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and scientific progress in unraveling the mysteries that lie beyond Earth's atmosphere.
