Space dog capsule

Space dog capsule. Model of Sputnik 2, the Soviet satellite capsule that carried Laika, the dog who became the first animal to go into orbit. Sputnik 2 was launched on 3 November 1957. Laika (meaning " husky" or " barker" ) was held in an airtight cabin with a food store and an air conditioner. Instruments transmitted data to Earth about Laikas pulse, respiration, blood pressure and heartbeat until she died. At the time, the Soviet news agency said she lived for some seven days, but in fact she died a few hours after take- off, due to overheating and panic. The spacecraft was not designed to be recovered and it burnt up as it re- entered the atmosphere on 14 April 1958, 162 days after its launch. Photographed at the USSR National Economy Achievements Exhibition, Moscow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Space dog capsule, a model of Sputnik 2, which carried Laika, the courageous canine who made history as the first animal to venture into orbit. Launched on November 3,1957, this Soviet satellite capsule housed Laika in an airtight cabin equipped with essential supplies and an air conditioner. Instruments onboard transmitted valuable data about her vital signs until her unfortunate demise. Laika's name translates to "husky" or "barker" reflecting her spirited nature. Although initially reported to have survived for seven days, she tragically succumbed just hours after take-off due to overheating and panic. This heart-wrenching sacrifice paved the way for future advancements in space exploration. The photograph was taken at the USSR National Economy Achievements Exhibition in Moscow, where this remarkable replica stands as a testament to mankind's pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet's boundaries. The image encapsulates both the triumphs and tragedies of early space exploration efforts. As we reflect upon this significant milestone in human history, it is important to acknowledge that this mission also served as propaganda during a time marked by intense competition between nations striving for dominance in space travel. The Sputnik program propelled Russia forward while sparking global fascination with manned spaceflight. This print from Science Photo Library serves as a poignant reminder of Laika's bravery and contribution to scientific progress—a symbol of humanity's relentless quest for discovery amidst adversity.
