Soyuz-TM 12 space crew. The crew of Soyuz-TM 12, from left to right, was: Sergei Krikalev, Anatloi Artsebarski and Helen Sharman. Soyuz-TM 12 was launched on 18 May 1991. Sharman was the first Briton to go into space. She was selected for the mission by Project Juno, a private British space programme, out of 13, 000 applicants. After 18 months of intense space training, Sharman spent eight days on the Mir space station, returning to Earth aboard Soyuz TM-11 on 26 May 1991. Krikalev gained world fame as the cosmonaut stranded in space for 10 months due to the break-up of the former Soviet Union
