Southern fur seal colony

Southern fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) breeding colony. The southern (or South American) fur seal breeds in large, densely-packed colonies. Bulls defend territories of about 50 square metres from rivals by growling and making threatening displays. This relative of the sea lion feeds on fish and krill. It is preyed on by sea lions, sharks and killer whales. It is found around the southern part of South America and on southern Atlantic islands. It is distinguished from " true" seals by its external ears. Hunting for fur reduced the population, but numbers have since recovered. Photographed on South Georgia Island

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of a Southern fur seal colony in all its glory. The Southern fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus australis, thrives in large breeding colonies that are densely-packed with these remarkable creatures. In this snapshot taken on South Georgia Island, we witness the bulls fiercely defending their territories of approximately 50 square meters from rival males through growling and intimidating displays. Belonging to the same family as sea lions, this marine mammal distinguishes itself by possessing external ears. With a diet consisting mainly of fish and krill, the Southern fur seal faces predation from sea lions, sharks, and even killer whales. Once hunted for its valuable fur which led to population decline, these resilient creatures have since made an impressive recovery. The photograph showcases not only the natural beauty of this sub-Antarctic region but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts in protecting such diverse wildlife populations. As they bask under the sun on a picturesque beach along the southern part of South America or on southern Atlantic islands like Falkland Islands, these charismatic pinnipeds remind us of nature's intricate balance between predator and prey.
