Southern fur seal
Southern fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) bull with unusually pale fur. Adult males are normally dark grey. The southern fur seal breeds in large, densely-packed colonies. Bulls defend territories of about 50 square metres from rivals by growling and making threatening displays. This relative of the sea lion feeds on fish and krill. It is preyed on by sea lions, sharks and killer whales. It is found around the southern part of South America and on southern Atlantic islands. It is distinguished from " true" seals by its external ears. Hunting for fur reduced the population, but numbers have since recovered. Photographed on South Georgia Island
