EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century in South America, where indigenous people are depicted harvesting the bountiful fruits of a choine tree. The artwork, created by French explorer and writer Andre Thevet, showcases the rich history and geography of the lands he had traversed. In this particular woodcut from chapter XVII of book XXI in his renowned work "Cosmographie universelle" we witness a scene that beautifully intertwines nature, culture, and agriculture. The image portrays a family immersed in their daily farming routine amidst Brazil's tropical landscape. A caucasian man stands tall beside a woman and child as they gather oranges and lemons - fruits native to Asia but developed into large tropical varieties by Portuguese colonists. This harmonious blend of cultures is emblematic of the diverse influences shaping Latin America during this era. The monochrome illustration evokes a sense of nostalgia for an age gone by while highlighting the intricate details found within botanical studies prevalent during medieval times. It serves as a testament to humanity's deep connection with nature throughout history.
