Sonar image of ocean floor off Oregon, USA

Sea floor off Oregon. High-definition coloured sonar image of the continental shelf off the Oregon coast, USA. This most detailed mapping of the east Pacific floor off the North American coast was made by ships recording sound echos from the ocean bottom. Colours show depths of the ocean floor: white (near sea level), orange (1000 metres), yellow (2000 m), blue (3000 m). On this continental shelf, seafloor sediments are being piled up in long ridges along the Oregon margin. By a process called subduction, these ridges form as the Juan de Fuca Plate is being overriden and pushed into the Earth by the North American Plate

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing sonar image of the ocean floor off the coast of Oregon, USA. The high-definition colored display provides an unprecedented view of the continental shelf in the East Pacific region, making it the most detailed mapping ever accomplished along the North American coast. This remarkable feat was achieved by ships utilizing sound echoes to record data from the ocean bottom. The colors depicted in this image represent varying depths of the ocean floor. Starting with white, which signifies areas near sea level, followed by orange (1000 meters), yellow (2000 meters), and finally blue (3000 meters). It is fascinating to observe how seafloor sediments accumulate in long ridges along Oregon's margin on this expansive continental shelf. These unique formations are a result of subduction, a geological process where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. In this case, as the Juan de Fuca Plate is being overridden and pushed into Earth's mantle by the North American Plate, these magnificent ridges form. This photograph not only highlights nature's awe-inspiring beauty but also serves as a valuable scientific resource. By capturing such intricate details beneath our oceans' surface, researchers gain crucial insights into underwater topography and geologic processes that shape our planet.
