Solar system, 1893
Solar system. Diagram of the solar system, based on the astronomical knowledge at the end of the 19th century. The Sun is at centre. The orbits of the planets out to Saturn are shown, as well as the asteroid belt (marked insminor planets) between Mars and Jupiter. The orbits of two comets are also shown, as well as the moons and rings of Jupiter and Saturn. The planetary orbits are to scale, though the orbits of the moons are not to scale. Two other planets had been discovered by this time (Uranus and Neptune), but are not shown. Halleys comet was identified as periodic in the 17th century. Fayes comet had been discovered more recently, in 1843. Artwork from Pioneers of Science (Oliver Lodge, 1893)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Solar system, 1893" takes us back to the end of the 19th century when astronomical knowledge was rapidly expanding. The artwork, featured in Oliver Lodge's book "Pioneers of Science" beautifully illustrates our solar system as understood at that time. At the center of this intricate diagram is our radiant Sun, surrounded by meticulously depicted planetary orbits up until Saturn. Interestingly, it also showcases the asteroid belt situated between Mars and Jupiter, labeled as minor planets. Two comets gracefully glide through space within their designated paths. The awe-inspiring moons and rings of Jupiter and Saturn are thoughtfully included in this illustration, although not drawn to scale like the planetary orbits themselves. Notably absent from this depiction are Uranus and Neptune since they had already been discovered but were omitted from this particular representation. It is fascinating to note that Halley's comet had been identified as periodic centuries earlier in the 17th century while Faye's comet was more recently discovered in 1843. As we gaze upon this historic artwork, we appreciate its contribution to celestial mechanics and how it reflects humanity's evolving understanding of our place within the vastness of space. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to both scientific progress and artistic expression during a pivotal era in history.
