Solar rotation

Solar rotation. Sequence of 35 optical images taken a day apart, showing the rotation of the Suns surface. The first image (upper left) was taken on 1st June 2000, and the last (bottom right) on 5th July 2000. The rotation is seen in the movement of dark sunspots from left to right across the solar disc. Different parts of the Sun rotate at different rates. At the equator, the Suns surface rotates in 25.4 days. Sunspots are cooler areas on the Suns surface, thought to be caused by interactions within the Suns magnetic field. They tend to occur in two bands above and below the solar equator

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing phenomenon of solar rotation, offering a stunning sequence of 35 optical images taken over the course of a month. Each image, captured a day apart, showcases the gradual rotation of the Sun's surface. The journey begins with the first image in the upper left corner, dated 1st June 2000, and concludes with the last image in the bottom right corner on 5th July 2000. The most striking feature depicted is the movement of dark sunspots from left to right across the solar disc. These cooler areas on the Sun's surface are believed to be caused by intricate interactions within its magnetic field. Fascinatingly, different parts of our star rotate at varying rates; for instance, at its equator, it completes one full rotation every 25.4 days. In this monochrome masterpiece from Science Photo Library, we witness nature's celestial ballet unfold before our eyes. The active and dynamic nature of our Sun is beautifully showcased through these multiple images capturing its maximum activity during this period. This extraordinary visual documentation not only offers an awe-inspiring glimpse into astrophysics and cosmology but also serves as a reminder that even seemingly unchanging entities like stars are constantly evolving and transforming. Let this remarkable print ignite your curiosity about our vast universe and inspire you to explore further into realms beyond imagination.
