Solar eruption

Solar eruption. Image 3 of 3. SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) image of the Sun showing a huge coronal mass ejection (CME, lower centre). The image was taken at 12:42pm GMT on 28th October 2003. CMEs are enormous jets of plasma (ionised gas) that erupt from the Sun due to variances in its magnetic field. If the stream of charged particles is directed towards Earth, it may cause electrical blackouts and widespread aurora displays. This flare was the third most powerful ever detected. The frequency of sunspots and eruptions varies on an 11 year cycle. The maximum of this cycle was in 2000. For a sequence showing the eruption, see images R530/119-121

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing solar eruption, showcasing the sheer power and beauty of our Sun. Taken by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) on October 28th, 2003, at 12:42pm GMT, this image reveals a colossal coronal mass ejection (CME) at the lower center. CMEs are immense jets of ionized gas that erupt from the Sun due to fluctuations in its magnetic field. The significance of this particular flare cannot be understated; it ranks as the third most powerful ever detected. With its potential to disrupt electrical systems and create stunning aurora displays when directed towards Earth, such eruptions remind us of both nature's destructive force and its ability to inspire awe. It is worth noting that sunspots and eruptions follow an 11-year cycle, with maximum activity occurring in 2000. This extraordinary photograph serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of our star and its impact on our planet. As we gaze upon this image, we witness not only a celestial event but also humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this momentous occurrence for all to appreciate – an exquisite blend of science, artistry, and cosmic wonder.
