Solar eclipse geometry

Solar eclipse geometry, artwork. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes across the Sun as seen from the Earth. The Moons shadow consists of a dark central umbra surrounded by the lighter penumbra. A total eclipse is seen from within the umbra, around a hundred kilometres across, and can last for several minutes. From the area covered by the penumbra, a few thousand kilometres across, a partial eclipse is visible. A solar eclipse occurs only at New Moon, and even then only if the Earth- Moon alignment is correct, usually less than once a year. Totality is rare at any one location. It last occurred at this point in Morocco in 1778

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Solar Eclipse Geometry" showcases the mesmerizing phenomenon of a solar eclipse. The image beautifully captures the intricate alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth during this celestial event. As the Moon passes in front of the Sun from our perspective on Earth, its shadow is divided into two distinct regions - the dark central umbra and the lighter penumbra. Within the umbra, which spans around a hundred kilometers across, lucky observers experience a total eclipse that can last for several minutes. This rare occurrence offers an awe-inspiring sight as darkness envelops the landscape while only a ring of sunlight surrounds the blackened silhouette of our Moon. The print also highlights Morocco's historical significance in witnessing totality back in 1778 at this exact location. Solar eclipses are infrequent phenomena that require precise alignment between our planet and its natural satellite during New Moon phases. Such cosmic events remind us of both our smallness within this vast universe and how intricately connected we are to it. This stunning illustration serves as a reminder of humanity's fascination with space exploration and astrophysics. It invites viewers to contemplate their place within our Milky Way galaxy and ponder upon orbital mechanics that govern these extraordinary occurrences. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this momentous event through artistry, offering us an opportunity to appreciate nature's grandeur beyond commercial use limitations
